Mangrove School of Sarasota will once again celebrate the tradition of May Day, this time with a Florida twist!

In ancient traditions, the lovely festival of May Day marks what is considered the first day of summer in Celtic lands.  For many years, we have upheld this tradition, gathering in an open field to dance the Maypole in the mid-day sun, as it is done up North.  This year, we will be adapting this sweet festival for our own climate and culture, by celebrating the coming of summer with a beach evening, and dancing the maypole at sunset.

As usual, we will have our Maypole with flowers on the top and ribbons hanging from it to weave in and out with skipping songs and dances. We will  all join hands and hearts around the Maypole to festive live music and rejoice in the coming of  summer, with many relaxing, breezy evenings at the beach.

A lively traditional Morris Stick dance will be  shared by our 3rd/4th grade.

Families are invited to  enjoy the lovely dancing, singing, and live music that are woven throughout the festivities!

We Invite You To Join Us For:

Live music, and maypole dancing.

What To Bring:

Blanket and/or chairs, and a picnic dinner for your own picnic. Flowers, if you would like to make a floral wreath. We will have vines and other supplies on hand, if you need.   Mangrove students will make these at school.

Fun for adults and kids of all ages!

Did you know there is now an income based scholarship for low AND middle income Florida families?

Now in its 15th year, Florida Tax Credit Scholarships are now being made available to middle income families for the first time!

The current award amount for a full scholarship  for 2016-17 is $5886.

This amount is awarded to students with household incomes not exceeding 185% of the poverty level.  Beginning this year, partial scholarships, from 88% to 50% of the total full award amount, will be provided to students whose household income is too high to qualify for the full scholarship.

Click here for complete income guidelines

The partial scholarships will be available for students with household incomes up to $62,010 for a household of four, with the amount of scholarship reduced in proportion with increase of income.

The 2016-17 school year application are now available.

https://www.stepupforstudents.org/logins/income-based-scholarship-login/

Families are encouraged to apply as soon as applications become available.  Students with household incomes not exceeding 185% of poverty will still receive full scholarships and will receive first priority.

Our school offers an affordable tuition program, in addition to accepting the Tax Credit Scholarship, McKay, and PLSA scholarships.  We have also initiated a Tuition Service Credit Program for those who do not qualify for the aforementioned scholarships, but desire a progressive private education for their child.  TSC applications are processed through www.tads.com after the student has applied and been accepted to our school.

It is our ultimate goal to have this form of education available to all who seek it for their child.

Santa Lucia Day celebrates the life of Saint Lucy and light for the longest night of the year.  This day usually begins before sunrise, with the oldest daughter in the family making Santa Lucia buns to bring to her parents. She typically wears white, with a red sash, and a wreath of candles on her head. Other girls in the family are dressed in white as attendants and the boys are dressed as “star boys.” In many Scandinavian countries this day begins the Christmas season.

Some stories say Lucia was known as a saint who brought food and drink to parts of Sweden during a period of famine in medieval times. Other stories point out the Sicilian origins of Lucy and tell how she brought food to the poor souls living in the catacombs. Regardless of the origin, Santa Lucia is seen as a symbol of hope and light during the dark of Winter, and her day is still celebrated in Scandinavian countries, Italy and other countries today.

As is tradition, our beautiful second graders held our Santa Lucia celebration for our community this past week. We are especially thankful to the second grade families who helped bring this festival to life – from crowns, to gowns, to photography, and of course the coveted Santa Lucia treats – the class as a whole – parents, students and teacher come together to present this to the rest of the school.

Dressed in traditional Santa Lucia attire, and with a gift of saffron scented Lucia buns, the students serenade our community as they move from classroom to classroom and building to building with the following song:

Santa Lucia, Thy light is glowing

All through the darkest night, comfort bestowing

Dreams float on wings of night,

Comes then the morning light

Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia

Through silent winter gloom, Thy song comes winging to

Waken the Earth anew, Glad carols bringing,

Come thou, oh queen of Night,

Wearing thy crown so bright,

Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia

Santa Lucia, Christmas foretelling,

Fill hearts with hope and cheer, Dark fear dispelling,

Bring to the world’s call,

Peace and goodwill to all,

Santa Lucia, Santa Lucia

For our community, seeing these sweet children singing is such a gift of joy and peacefulness, and a wonderful way to begin the holiday break.
